I've been considering that kind of multitasking when writing a book. If I have multiple story concepts, it's probably helpful to develop at least two or three, for the purpose of continuing to make progress with something. It should keep a continuous flow of fresh ideas, and help to stay motivated. In theory it works well, but for me it's hard to make it a habit.
I totally agree - it starts off feeling great and then can feel like you're trying to shoehorn a few ideas into one because you don't want to let go of them.
Yeah, that's surprisingly easy to do, to write too much content and then not be able to put all of it into the story. I was watching a video recently about Tarantino having that exact problem with Inglorious Basterds. He had the opposite of writer's block, and couldn't stop writing content. They sounded like great scenes too, but they legitimately just didn't fit. Of course, I could probably talk all day about stories with too much going on. haha
But what I meant by writing multiple story concepts was multiple separate books. I've been working on finishing a satire, but I also have a sci-fi concept I want to work on. It's probably a good idea to do both at the same time, but it's hard to switch gears from one to the other, back and forth.
Thank you, Julia!! What you are describing is exactly why I love the entire process of making animation. Been feeling a bit untethered myself, so I’m looking forward to this.
Mark it means the world to me that you're reading this, I have such admiration for you! Hopefully this can tether us both, sorry you're feeling that feeling too!
Well put and well named.
